Movie v. Drama: Who did it better? Case #1 — Love O2O

Love O2O (Online 2 Offline) or One Smile is Very Alluring (Chinese name: 微微一笑很倾城) was originally a book written by famous Chinese internet novelist Gu Man (顾漫). It was made into a drama series starring Zheng Shuang and Yang Yang and a movie starring Angelababy and Jing Boran.

So which one is better? I’ve watched both (the movie and most of the drama) and I have lots of thoughts about it.

Presenting to you my virgin blog post — Movie vs. Drama Case #1: Love O2O, an attempt at an “objective” breakdown of the respective virtues and flaws of the movie and drama adaptation.

1. Visuals: Cinematography and CGI

Oh my god the CGI in the movie oh my god. The movie combined impeccable CGI with good cinematography to create wonderful visuals, that for me, far outstripped those of the drama.

Just look at how cute the beginning credits are.

fullsizeoutput_141f

The RPG game in the movie is freaking gorgeous and so detailed. You see that huge shadowy structure in the background? It appears later in the story.

fullsizeoutput_1420

The game visuals for the drama (below) aren’t as impressive as the movie’s (above). But the lower-quality makes it look more like a real-life RPG game.

Still, look at how badass Wei Wei’s character looks in the movie.

Besides the gorgeous CGI, I also enjoyed the cinematography in the movie. I was blown away by how well thought-out many of the scenes were. The director incorporated the CGI in very creative ways to push forward the plot in such a short time. In particular, the film did a great job of blending the online and offline worlds. See the pictures below.

One of my favourite scenes. The fight sequence is so badass. Watching Yixiao Naihe (一笑奈何) give Zhenshui WuXiang (真水无香) a smackdown was very satisfying.

fullsizeoutput_142a

In contrast, I felt that drama had rather generic cinematography that served its purpose but never truly wowed me.

Final Verdict: Movie wins hands down for visuals.

2. Sets

Before I watched the movie, I thought the sets for the drama were adequate. But now that I’ve watched the movie, I can’t get over how artificial the sets for the drama look.

Movie Verse: The girls’ dorm room…

Drama Verse: The girls’ dorm room…

fullsizeoutput_1439

The movie sets look more realistic than the drama sets. In the movie, every inch of the dorm room is crammed with stuff — the clothes hanging at the window, the photos pasted on the cupboards, the desks teeming with books and knick-knacks. These tiny details make the room looks cosy and lived in. It looks like a real college dorm.

Whereas the dorm room in the drama looks straight out of a furniture catalogue. It’s too spacious , too neat, too sanitised. Where is the mess that is endemic to college life? Also, who gives college kids white furniture? The white lighting used in the scenes (as opposed to the warm yellow lighting in the movie) also adds to the sanitised and impersonal feeling.

Drama Verse: The boys’ office…

Is again unrealistically spacious and modern. But my main complaint is that it looks cold and impersonal. Like I said earlier, straight out of a furniture catalogue — the interior design company that sponsored this drama must be really into white furniture.

Also, Xiao Nai is the only one to have his own office; the rest work in the common space. This detail might just be to show how awesome he is but it always irritated me. This means that he and his friends are not on an equal footing — he is on a level above them. This goes against what a lot of tech start-ups believe in — equality. Also, flawed humans as we are, the strongest friendships are those based on equality. Inequality and subsequent jealousy is the surest way to ruin a friendship. For me, him having his own office doesn’t bode well for his friendships. Then I remember that this drama is about as realistic as a moon made out of blue cheese…

Movie Verse: The boys’s office…

fullsizeoutput_143e

Still unrealistically spacious but hey, at least, it looks lived in. Also, I’m glad they chose to invest their money in getting multiple computers instead of getting Xiao Nai a fancy (but frankly hideous-looking) post-modern cuboid desk.

Final Verdict: I am highly in favour of the movie’s sets — they look cosier and more realistic. Also, I adore all the little props in the movie such as Wei Wei’s gamer keyboard and the little gamer figurines all over her desk. Also, unlike in the drama, in the movie, the characters have invested in PCs in their dorm rooms. Helllo, no avid gamer worth her salt is going to settle with a simple laptop.

3. Acting and Characterisation

This is a hard one because Yang Yang’s perfect face is just fiddling with my objectivity. With much pain, I have to admit that I felt that the acting in the movie was better than the acting in the drama for both the male — Yang Yang 大神 sorry to betray you sobs — female leads. At least for me, the actors in the movies were more expressive and animated than the drama actors.

Jing Boran’s Xiao Nai V. Yang Yang’s Xiao Nai

Looks wise, Yang Yang as Xiao Nai wins hands down at first glance. But Jing Boran grows on you. At least he did for me and now I can’t unseen him as Xiao Nai. The devil is in the details. Jing Boran’s micro-expressions and body language brought life to character of Xiao Nai in a way that Yang Yang didn’t. Yang Yang was too stiff and for his really pretty face — brings out my inner bitch — he has limited facial expressions. There I said it. Most of the time, he has a — 冰块儿脸 — ice-cube face.

Case in point, when Xiao Nai searches for Wei Wei in the basketball match.

Jing Boran’s crooked little smile just kills me. Okay, Yang Yang’s smiling yet not smiling face kills me too. But he almost always has that expression. Jing Boran has a wider range of quality hot face. A crooked secret smile for when he and Wei Wei are the only ones in the know about their relationship. A different smug satisfied smile for when he has completely demolished the pest that is his wifey’s ex-husband.

And body language. In the movie, before Xiao Nai goes up to meet Wei Wei, we see him straighten up his coat. It’s a small action but it adds depth to his character. We see that he wants to look good in front of Wei Wei. Maybe he even feels a little nervous? This extra detail just makes him so much more fleshed out and human. And the more real he seems, the easier it is to delude ourselves into thinking he could exist IRL, am I right?

Which is why I didn’t mind that the movie portrayed Xiao Nai as an actually believable human-being instead of a perfect god (even if it deviated from the original storyline). Instead of being ahead of seasoned businessmen who know their shit all the freaking time like in the drama, Xiao Nai and his team’s ideas are stolen by the big gaming company in the movie. (Random side note: the evil GM of the gaming company looks like the frog villain in the beginning of the show.)

It really captures the fears of college students, of being bright and idealistic, ready to step into the adult world and make a difference, only to have your dreams crushed by the real adults. Xiao Nai’s slow-mo angsty music walk through Shanghai was a bit over-the-top melodramatic and heavy-handed but it works. The plot point was also resolved way too quickly but they only had 1h and 45 minutes so I will forgive them.

Still, Wei Wei going the extra mile — or whatever the distance between her home and the university is — to go to Xiao Nai so he won’t be alone is what that really gets me to buy into their love.

And his face when he sees her outside his office’s window with his friends, waving sparklers. Jing Boran plays this moment wonderfully, his micro-expressions shifting from disbelief that she is here to disbelief that she would go so far —literally — for him to touched. Add in the background music, their theme song that has played during each of their important moments, and it is beautiful.

Those scenes (and especially the kiss afterwards) made be believe that what they had was genuine even though due to the limited screentime, their courtship was so fast-game heh. Basically, the chemistry was cute and adorable.

Angelababy’s Wei Wei V. Zheng Shuang’s Wei Wei

Angelababy’s Bei Wei Wei is animated, intelligent and dorky. Her expressions are golden — especially when she’s having an internal monologue after having embarrassed herself. Also, her voice is rather low here which makes it sort of tomboyish and adds to her believability as a gaming nerd. So I found myself really buying into her character. I could believe that she was a strong, independent smart girl who loves gaming.

Again, it was the little details that made it work. Like when she described to her friends how she put down Cao Guang, the guy who started the rumour that she had a sugar daddy, she went into total gaming mode — “So I used the move ‘Black Tiger Digging out Heart’ and KO’d him.” So dorky. I love it.

I mentioned this earlier but the gaming figurines all over her desk? When you love something, it seeps into every part of your life. I felt that the movie showed Wei Wei’s character and love for gaming more effectively than the drama ever did in the first 12 episodes that I watched seriously (I skimmed the rest of the drama).

In fact, I found Zheng Shuang’s Wei Wei rather bland which is quite surprising because gamer girls are a rare breed even in real life. How could such a unique character be so boring? A combination of meh writing and meh acting probably. I suppose Wei Wei is a very elegant and quiet girl but passionate people have strong emotions and I never really saw strong emotions from Zheng Shuang’s Wei Wei.

Also, I found Wei Wei’s smackdown of Cao Guang in the movie way more satisfying than the drama’s. It might not be as true to the book but I’ll take a badass female over gentle elegant one anytime.

Also, she was more useful in the movie than in the drama. In the movie, she actively helped with developing a new game while in the drama, she was pretty useless. I have very little patience for useless characters.

Last point, Angelababy looks more normal-sized. Zheng Shuang is stick-thin and I snorted when the drama hinted that her cup size was 34C — imagine her back problems?

His Friends and Her Friends

Again, for some reason, I preferred the actors and actresses in the movie. They felt more animated. At times, I felt that the actors in the drama were simply standing around and reciting lines. In addition, the blocking in the drama was weird. For instance, sometimes, when Xiao Lai and his friends are talking, the three friends would stand in a line and Xiao Nai would stand opposite. It looked stiff, like bad acting, not like a natural conversation.

Cao Guang was played by the same actor in both the movie and the drama so no comment.

Final Verdict: Acting in the movie was better than in the drama. Feel free to dispute me on this.

4. Last but not least, THE KISS

Movie: Hot damn.

But seriously though, that determined look in his eyes before he pulls her back into the elevator. The way they intertwined their hands as they were kissing. The way he brought her hand to wrap around his waist. Eeee.

Drama: Pretty people making out is always aesthetically appealing if nothing else.

I’m too shy to post the pictures, go watch the show again yourself.

Overall Thoughts

I enjoyed the movie a lot more than the drama. I watched it thrice within three days while I fast-forwarded through the drama after episode 5 and stopped paying attention after episode 12. The movie wasn’t perfect—the plot was rushed and the editing a bit choppy due to the short duration)—so I totally get why many people prefer the drama version. Still, I preferred the visuals and acting in the movie. The music was evocative and mostly well-placed; the music in the drama was not too bad but hearing the same two songs gets boring. And I think the actors dressed better in the movie. Like no offence but Wei Wei’s red dress in the drama was so hideously country-bumpkin I had to fast-forward through the entire scene to the hug.

So what are your thoughts?

I agree. The movie was better than series. Angelababy was animate, graceful, cheerful – Zheng Shuang was rigid, saltless, unspirit and her girlfriends were jerk, stupid, one-dimensional, her enemies was unfacial. Jang Yang was ice cube, a zero man, dandified young man, his friends were stupid, imponderous. 🙂

THE Movie. The Plot was better portrayed in the movie and the obstacles made more sense. When she crashed the wedding, she literally crashed into it, but in the drama, she just stood on the bridge. Also, The Kiss. In the drama, we wait 17 episodes for that kiss and it is the most uncomfortable kiss that I have ever seen. The leads have NO chemistry. I thought the character was going to throw up. Worst kiss ever, and I’ve seen the spit string kiss from Cruel Intentions. I just wish that the movie was a little longer and showed the developing relationship between the two leads and the process of designing and completing the new game.

You’re right, the plot in the movie is very rushed. I probably wouldn’t have enjoyed the movie as much as I did if I had not watched the drama first. But after watching the drama, I really really enjoyed the movie which is why I was inspired by to write this post. This is my subjective review (hence the word “objective” is in quotes) and I will readily admit I am very biased towards the movie.

10000000% agree that the movie is better than the drama. I watched the movie before the drama and I couldn’t make it past the first two episodes of the drama. The movie just hits all my emotions and captivates me more than the drama

Haven’t gone all the way through the drama but I really loved the sweetness of the movie. I loved that he fell for her and acted on it asap. I loved what he said in the end..something like..If I knew how much I would love you I would have fallen for you at first sight.” Which I think he actually did. And he’s so quietly pleased as she was telling the other guy that she liked someone in the computer department. And when he insisted on an elaborate wedding. And when he said he wanted to bring their child there someday. A truly masculine guy who put all of his heart into making her his, yet in a gentle and impressive way. I also appreciate that there was absolutely no cruelty or mean games between the two. It was just a simple, yet subtle love story.

The movie made me squeal more in one hour than the drama ever did in the ten hours or so that I watched. The short length of the movie all cut out all the unnecessary filler material which bored me in the drama.

As a person who watched the drama first before the movie. I felt there was better character development with the drama. The movie felt rushed and i never felt like i truly got to know the supporting characters. Yang Yang felt like a guy who had never asked a girl out so he doesn’t know how to react all the time but he is very patient and understanding.. Jing Boran did grow on me. He was cute with his subtle reactions. Angelababy was great. All the complaints I had about Wei Wei in the drama, I had none in the movie. She was my favorite part! I like the graphics and costumes more in the drama and the character Cao Guang made more sense in the drama. And the kiss was definitely better in the movie. I could very well be very biased as I saw the drama first and was very invested before even knowing there was a movie.

Totally agree with this. I, too, watched the drama first. And it felt like the movie was rushed compared to the drama. Although i agree with the author on several points such as the character of Jing Boran, he grew on me as well. The CGI, I won’t argue. The movie indeed was superb in that aspect. The movie successfully portrayed the story as well as all the characters in a very realistic way such that many of us would be able to relate to it, gamer or non-gamer. But personally, the drama had me attached to the characters more and the progress of the story was not at all dragging nor dull. I finished all 30 episodes in 5 days despite being a working mom. Yes, i stayed up late just to binge-watch.

i finally got the chance to watch the movie when it appeared on netflix and i have to say i agree with you on everything. the drama was amazing at first, but then it kinda dragged, especially with Erxi and Cao Guang’s story development. i love Yang Yang and all, but Jing Boran made a more believable and realistic Xiao Nai to me. i watched all the episodes of the drama and was surprised i didn’t skipped, but i didn’t pay much attention when it was the side characters. i felt like it was just so much stuff going on at once. then again, the drama had a better pace and was more visually appealing. so thanks for this! =]

One error in ur post there the movie was actually released before the drama was I watched both and gotta say tho the movie does feel rushed in a sense it really wasn’t because it was released first and there followed the line it was supposed to the drama dragged out way to long and kinda deviated from the main story and fun face cho guang in the movie is the same as in the series which I found pretty cool but they developed his story too much

Wow, I didn’t expect something like this when I searched up movie vs. drama! I agree with literally everything you said. The movie, although it did feel slightly choppy at times, was SO much better at portraying a realistic storyline. I’m so glad Angelababy actually kissed back; the drama kisses were so uncomfortable to watch, and the actors had no expressions while they did it. It really is about all the subtle actions and expressions the movie actors made that made the movie far more satisfying for me. At first I didn’t think Jing Boran was attractive, while I immediately drooled over Yang Yang, but Boran had the better portrayal and characterization of Xiaonai by far. With just under two hours, the movie cut out all the boring, unnecessary plot fillers and just focused on delivering the good stuff. And I’m also glad the movie showed, as you said, the bright, young college students being cheated by the big corporation, instead of making them instantly successful. Even the sets, again as you pointed out, are way more realistic and therefore allowed me to become immersed in the movie world, while I found myself bored or cringing or rolling my eyes during the drama. Thanks for this side-by-side comparison!

I personally prefer the drama over the movie, due to the fact that the personality of Bei Weiwei in the drama was closer to the novel (and manhua) as she is much more conservative rather than outgoing plus the character visuals of Xiao Nai is well characterised by Yang Yang through his looks, but both Boran Jing and Yang Yang’s interpretation of their characters are quite spot on. I also feel that Angelababy’s representation of her character offline is too pursuing especially the scene with Cao Guang in the classroom at the start as her personality in the novel (and manhua) would’ve never had humiliated him in front of the entire classroom. But with the background sets, the movie takes this one but only in the games as the scenes of the town and such seems more realistic than the dramas (obvious) green screens, the offline background in the drama are a lot softer than the movie giving it a more gentle and cleaner vibe. Plus I prefer the romantic interactions with Xiao Nai and Bei Weiwei in the drama rather than the movie, as you wouldn’t suspect someone who has never been in a relationship to know how to kiss right away and the awkward atmosphere in the office scene gives it a more realistic and innocent finish and this innocent interactions is later developed as the series goes on. But that’s just my overall opinion on why the drama is better as it just doesn’t go straight into the relationship right away but actually develops it through, plus it is a much closer representation of the manhua and novel. 🙂

I just finished the movie, 6 months after watching the drama. I don’t feel that the drama couple has much chemistry and I really like how more normal the movie couple appear. Xiao Nia in the drama was rich, super smart and good looking. He always wins. That’s just …boring. Xiao Nia in the movie was more realistic. He’s smart but screwed up too (too trusting). Yet he succeeded…. With friends. In the drama, he probably could have made it without his buddies… Because he’s that good.

And… Yeah. Angela Baby seems to fit the character better. The scene in the drama where Bei Wei Wei tries clothes and her friends thought she has a chest…. I was like… Err. I think her friends had a better figure than her. Lol..I hated how perfect the drama couple were. I found the drama so draggy… Anyways I bought the novel and will attempt to read it. Haha Google translate 😌

Good luck with the novel! I totally agree that perfectness of Xiao Nai in the drama made him kind of…dare I say it…boring.

And that cleavage scene! That was one of the last straws for me. I get that the drama producers are trying to stick closely to the novel since the book has a lot of die-hard fans. But, please don’t tell me she has a chest when she is flat.

One thing that I thought was good in the movie was when she was in the internet cafe. When her friend had asked for help she went straight there and helped him out. It helped to show what type of a character she was.. Then when she heard about Yixiao Naihe playing she quickly ran which shows her admiration for him. Also the fact that one of the reasons Xiao Nai fell in love with her is because she was loyal to her friends. I also thought the relationship between K.O and Weiwei was kinda cute because they were like siblings. another thing that i liked was the fact that in the movie not all Nai’s friends were handsome, for example one of them looked very geeky and nerdy (i forgot which of the boys it was).
In the drama, Xiao Nai just watched her play and was amazed by how fast her movements were then next thing you know their married in the game. i do like the fact that there first meeting in the game and irl mirrored,
I haven’t read the novel so i can’t compare it to what it was originally like but i like the movie better because it seems more realistic.

There are several points to which I would strongly agree with. The movie was portrayed in a rather more realistic point of view which makes it very relatable to the viewers, gamer or non-gamer. The cinematography in the film, i definitely have to agree with the author of this post. The chemistry between angelababy and jing boran was a bomb. The supporting characters as well as the set were all very relatable. But as a person who has watched the drama first than the movie, i still couldn’t move on from the drama feels. The characters had me attached to each one of them. I like how the friendship among the girls’ group was portrayed especially between erxi and weiwei when they had some falling out and how they were so close with each other. The same goes with the boys’ group. I like how they were so goofy around each other and how supportive they were to Nai. The chemistry between Yang Yang and Zeng Shuang was for me vey cheesy and too good to be true but i personally prefer to watch this as of portayed idealism which satisfies the fantasy of the viewers. The mysterious character of Nai and his being worhipped like a god was successfully portrayed.
Overall, i dont think there has to be a better version. The movie successfully served its purpose as a movie. And i liked it as well. The drama has likewise succeeded in serving its puroose as a series. We have different palate and are freeto choose which between the two really had more impact to us. Personally, i would still choose the drama though for satifying that little fangirl spirit within me. 🙂

    Awesome writing. Thanks!
For me the main put off in the drama was the female lead. She absolutely showed no love for the main lead or the character. It irritated me when the friend was called less beautiful than her. The friend was equally cute, infact, more natural than her. When has “being skinny like a twig” become equal to being beautiful than a woman with a normal body. In fact there was a cake eating scene where I started believing that the FL was anorexic. My second point, if not more important is the horrendous kissing. OK agreed to some arguments that, in the first kiss she was inexperienced, unexpected blah blah…what about the others? I felt sorry for our most handsome Yang Yang who was literally searching for some grounds to kiss her. I did not find her character or love grow through the drama (where it has space and time to grow). In fact it went for the worse, from a coder she became a helper for food delivery and ordering bed. Seriously people, is this what happens to a FL who is a top coder/developer?
I dislike female leads who act as if they are only eye candies and they lack something than the male leads and this drama was a huge disappointment in that area.
I thought the movie though choppy was much better. I loved the kick ass female lead and girl -yes, you are a good kisser.
By the way,, I saw an ongoing drama by the name “lost romance” and the FL is one of the best kissers i have seen.

But being able to see the movie was a blessing for me because the drama was so bad and irritating because the director may have good looking actors but their scripts was just a waste of time .

For me I would say the movie was far better.

And for the kissing scenes in the drama their first was so horrible.

Don’t let me lie I like the drama between KO and hoi mei

As for the movie the kissing scene was nice and amazing
